Overview: Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 meters (26,414 feet), is the twelfth-highest mountain on Earth. It is part of the Karakoram Range, located on the border between Pakistan and China in Gilgit-Baltistan. Broad Peak is situated about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. Known for its massive breadth, the mountain derives its name from its extensive summit ridge, which stretches over 1.5 kilometers.
Geography and Location: Broad Peak lies in the heart of the Karakoram Range, in proximity to other prominent peaks such as Gasherbrum I and II. It forms part of the Gasherbrum Massif and is located within the Baltoro Glacier region. The mountain’s distinctive broad summit ridge sets it apart from other sharp, towering peaks in the area.
Etymology and Naming: The name “Broad Peak” was given by British explorer Martin Conway in 1892, referring to the wide, flat summit. Locally, the peak is known as “Falchan Kangri,” with “Falchan” meaning “broad” in Balti, the language of the region.
Climbing History: Broad Peak was first successfully climbed on June 9, 1957, by an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck, with Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl reaching the summit. This climb is notable for being completed without supplemental oxygen, showcasing the team’s remarkable endurance and skill. Broad Peak is often considered a challenging climb due to its high altitude and harsh weather conditions, though it is deemed less technically demanding compared to nearby K2.
Notable Climbing Routes:
- West Ridge (Standard Route): This is the most commonly attempted route, following a straightforward path to the summit with fewer technical challenges. However, climbers must navigate crevasses and avalanche-prone areas.

Climbing Season and Conditions: The best time to attempt Broad Peak is during the summer months of June to August, when weather conditions are relatively stable. Winter ascents are extremely rare due to extreme cold, high winds, and dangerous conditions.

Sudden weather changes, avalanches, and altitude sickness are constant dangers.
